Hormonal Baldness in Men and Women.
The most common cause of loss of hair in both men and women is male and female pattern baldness, medically referred to as androgenetic alopecia. It is a genetic and hormonal disease developed by genetics and androgens. Pattern baldness is progressive and predictable; it occurs in the scalp hair, with the rest of the body hair being normal. Even though it is not a medical emergency, it may affect self-esteem and confidence greatly.
Pattern baldness in men can start with a receding hairline and thinning of the top of the head, which is then later followed by partial or total baldness. In women, the loss of hair is usually as diffuse as it occurs on top of the head, and the central area is widened, whereas the frontal hairline remains intact. The disease development and the level depend on individuals and tend to worsen as people get older.
Pattern baldness is mainly due to a hormone named dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes the hair follicles to become hyperirritable. With time, the growth of hair becomes shorter and finer as a result of DHT that shrinks hair follicles to a point of halting hair growth. The process can be expedited by stress, poor diet, hormonal fluctuations, and some medical conditions.
Treatment of male and female pattern baldness is aimed at preventing or alleviating the process of hair loss, fortifying old hair, and encouraging the growth of new hair where feasible. Early identification and treatment are more successful. Treatment regimes are normally long-term and must be consistent, like hair growth, which is in cycles.
Besides health care, a healthy lifestyle, stress management, and hair care practices can be helpful in terms of treatment outcomes. Although it may not be reversible all the time, early intervention can go a long way in enhancing the density of hair, its appearance and the confidence of an individual to look younger and healthier.
